Scale Insects

Scale insects on leaf

Scale insects are common and widespread on plants in houses, greenhouses and outdoors. Scale insects are sap-feeders, remaining in one place on a plant. They produce a sticky honey-dew, that drops onto the leaves below, encouraging the development of sooty mould. Plants are weakened by the feeding scales, and leaves may fall. A build up of sooty mould reduces light reaching the leaves, and is unsightly.
