Experiments in Biodynamic Garden
Report by Nicole Weber - Biodynamic Student 2007

Experiments with Tomato 'Matina':
- Sowing, transplanting and planting of Tomatoes on fruit days
- Sowing, transplanting and planting of Tomatoes on root days
- Both kept in same conditions, i.e. both kept in hot or cold bay
- After planting in borders both trials treated in the same way i.e. hoeing carried out on the same days or feeding with liquid manure on the same days with the same amount
Tomato 'Martina':
- Sown on the 21st of March 2007 (fruit day):
- Germination after 5 days, kept in the hot bay.
- Observation on the 3rd of April: to 4 cm high
- Observation on the 17th of April 1 till 2 cm bigger than the ones sown on the 23rd of March
- Transplanted on the 23rd of April in the afternoon about 2.30pm
- Planted out at the 24th of May (fruit day), but followed by really cold and wet conditions: Tomatoes struggled a bit with the weather
- Tomatoes are developing to strong big tomatoes with healthy fruits (June)
- Hoed around tomatoes on the 19th of June (fruit day) and 2nd of July (fruit day)
- Observation on the 21st of July: Tomatoes are much taller (around 5 cm) and carry more fruits on them, which are also further in the development compared to the ones sown on the root day
- Sown on the 23rd of March 2007 (root day):
- Germination after 8 days, kept in the hot bay.
- Observation on the 3rd of April: to 2 cm high
- Transplanted on the 23rd of April in the morning about 11am - strong root development
- Planted out at the 26th of May, which is a root day, but also bad cold weather conditions.
- Tomatoes are much smaller in growth than the ones sown on the fruit day.
- Hoed around tomatoes on the 19th of June and on the 2nd of July
Observations by Colum Pawson - Biodynamic Student 2008
The tomatoes in the biodynamic garden were far more productive than all the other outdoor tomatoes that were grown elsewhere on site. They also carried on fruiting well after the other plants in the gardens had been badly affected by blight in the autumn.
