Supporting a sustainable future
Why we need your legacy gift
Your legacy gift could help us in one of many ways. Here are just a few examples:
- To develop or renew one of our gardens. Each year we look at the gardens and decide which needs a major replanting or redevelopment so that we remain at the forefront of organic horticultural practice, with attractive places to visit.
At any time we will be working towards at least one major redevelopment.
Costs vary from £20,000 to £200,000, depending on the scale of what needs to be done.
To spread the message. We can’t go to as many events, shows, spread our information, or be represented in as many forums as we would like, due to limited budgets. This means people are missing out because we cannot tell them we’re here. In turn, we’re missing out on members and on effecting the change we’d like to see of people converting to more organic gardening. A legacy could help us to meet these needs
Costs of attending one show vary from around £5,000.
- Information is vital for people beginning organic gardening. We have always produced a wide range of quality literature covering all topics from compost to leaf mould and green manures. However, we have to charge for these leaflets, which limits distribution. With more support we could make some of the ‘taster’ leaflets free so that more people could find out about how to go organic.
Literature for nationwide distribution costs from £25,000.
Gardens replanting. On a smaller scale than a complete renewal but, as every gardener knows, even a perennial border needs refreshing from time to time. As a show garden, our borders and beds take more wear and tear than your average plot, so each year the gardener responsible will review what needs to be done.
Cost £2,000 - £10,000.
Helping to support our Heritage Seed Library. Who knows what important elements the 700+ seeds in our seed library may have for future generations? The biodiversity of our collection has not been explored at all. Major work over several years would be required, but investigating every variety would require major investment
Cost £35,000 per annum
Special initiatives – education. One of our principal charitable objects is to educate people about the organic, sustainable approach. As well as our gardens, literature and courses, we fulfil this obligation through special campaigns such as Organic Gardens for Schools and Organic Food for All.
Both of these initiatives currently have sponsors, who make a major contribution to them. However, it does not cover all costs, and we will want to look at new schemes in the future. Costs will vary.
- Art in the Gardens. Gardens are known to be attractive places for artists to create and display their work. We would like to develop a programme of art in our Gardens: from site-specific sculpture or drama to artists in residence working in a variety of media, to the Gardens as a backdrop to a performance of music or poetry. To do this we would need to establish an art fund which could be built up over time.
