Setting up a home wormery could be the answer to the age-old excuse 'I don't have room to compost', according to the UK's leading organic growing charity, which is urging everyone to give composting a go during Compost Awareness Week, Sunday 3 – Saturday 9 May 2009.

Garden Organic believes that wormeries could play a big part in reducing the 12.4 million tonnes of biodegradable municipal waste sent to landfill, of which 89% is household waste, by giving people without compost heaps the opportunity to compost items like vegetable peelings and paper waste products.

Heather Jackson, Garden Organic's wormery expert said, “Many people argue that they don't have room for a compost bin or heap, or that they don't have a need for the end product, which is why we're urging people to give wormeries a try.”

“The worms in a wormery love to eat their way through veg peelings, cardboard and tea leaves. People will notice that the amount of waste they would normally put in the bin will reduce dramatically as it can all be fed to the worms. What is more, a wormery doesn't take up much room and can easily be installed in a garden, on a patio or balcony or indoors and those that are worried about ending up with piles of worm compost should be reassured that the end product can be reduced by putting in less waste.”

“Wormeries really are a great way of reducing land fill and are an eco-friendly way of disposing of unwanted waste while creating a nutrient rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner that can be used on both garden or pot plants. Wormeries are the best alternative there is to a garden compost heap.”

Garden Organic, the charity responsible for training the nation's growing force of home compost enthusiasts known as Master Composters, is passionate about promoting sustainable waste solutions across communities. During Compost Awareness Week, a nationwide network of over 600 of its Master Composters will promote home composting activities at a variety of events.

At Garden Organic Ryton in Warwickshire, the charity's headquarters, a Composter's Question Time will take place on Monday 4th May from 11am – 3pm. Master Composters from the region will be on hand for people to drop in at the charity's ten-acre demonstration grounds and put their questions to the experts. The Master Composters will also demonstrate a range of compost bins, best techniques and different composting methods – including wormeries.
