Growing Naturally
A Teacher's Guide to Organic Gardening
A review
This is an ideal book for the busy teacher! It is full of relevant and practical information for teachers working at KS1, KS2 and KS3. The author, Maggi Brown, shows a deep understanding of the many shortcomings schools have to deal with and she never assumes there is a huge budget to dip into! The book gives the teacher an economical, realistic plan for beginning organic gardening in school. The author realises that they key to sustaining this project with pupils and staff has to be success, so the book contains invaluable advice obviously gleaned from her experience as a school's officer.
It is refreshing to read advice which deals with the awkwardness of school holiday times, when many projects don't succeed because of wrong timing. Maybe the book could have given hints on what could be done to keep things 'ticking over' if people cannot be on site.
The diagrams are useful and easy to read, but it would have been lovely to see a colour photograph or two to enjoy the 'aesthetics' of our organic garden!
The book is deceptive. It seems a short read at first glance, but it is jam-packed with guidance, information and fascinating facts.
I think teachers will enjoy dipping into this oasis of ideas, but they really should read the book from cover to cover to benefit from the whole organic concept.
The author gives the basic facts in such a way that no teacher could fail if the book is followed. An excellent resource for any school in any environment.
