Staying organic

The Sustainable Organic Vegetable Systems Network is a three year project funded by DEFRA that arose in response to the need to increase self sufficiency within the UK organic vegetable market. Many farms have already successfully converted to organic vegetable production, but if the growing demands of the market are to be met, there is the need to expand and develop production systems further. Large variations in performance (yields, prices and costs) between farms have been identified in other projects and the reasons behind this need to be explored more fully. Many growers feel that they would like more support and guidance in meeting the challenges of growing organic vegetables.

To that end, the Sustainable Organic Vegetable Systems Network will act as a framework to allow growers to develop their systems. By working closely with a group of vegetable growers, the project seeks to advance levels of knowledge on production systems and disseminate best practice to growers and other stakeholders in the industry.

  2. At present the project involves a group of 10 organic vegetable farmers who have agreed to take part in the study for three years. We do have plenty of other events (listed on this website) that are open to all.

  8. should we just take a one side view ( demand --> production = cause and effect), or start question the dynamics between the demand and production (Demand <--> Production = dialogue)?
Should the Sustainable Organic Vegetable Systems Network intrevene as well in the demand side?
