  1. Could you add a search facility on weed name to your weed information home page? It is hard for the uninitiated to know which to which category a particular weed belongs. I was hoping to find info on columbine but was unable to find which section it may be in.

  2. Have a field with large charlock population, just returned more seed post WW.Plan spring beans to maximise opportunities for tine weeding next March/April.Will cultivation of stubble pre-ploughing encourage a chit of charlock this autumn?
    - Adrian Hares,Wilts 9---0-2004

  3. It is always difficult to know with freshly shed seed on the soil surface whether to leave it for a while to allow predation by birds, rodents etc or to carry out a shallow cultivation to encourage germination. With charlock there will be some germination in the autumn but the main period of emergence is in spring. A shallow cultivation in the stubble will promote some seeds to germinate and help to reduce the seed burden but as you know many more will remain dormant. Cultivation in early spring prior to cropping will promote another seedling flush and reduce seed numbers further but charlock seed is very persistent and any input of fresh seed increases and prolongs the problem.

  4. Is it possible to grow Onions sets planting trough black plastic to keep the down and cut out the hours of hand hoeing?
    - Pete Gible 2---0-2005

  5. I have seen onions grown through black plastic and this works to keep the weeds down. I have only seen it on smaller areas as I guess the cost and practicalities increase with larger areas and the disposal of the plastic also becomes a problem in itself.

  6. How do I begin a herb garden? How big should I start?
    - Kirsten T. 8---0-2006

    Thanks.
