Project Trials and Surveys

discussion around flame weeder

Below is a list of topics, surveys and trials that have been developed. Please click on the links to get more information or to take part. The aim of this work was to develop weed management knowledge on the various themes suggested by providing a more structured approach to the process of collecting and disseminating information. Ultimately the intention was to help increase knowledge and share information about weed management across the organic farming community.

Each theme has been developed by combining farmer, advisor and researcher knowledge and experience. Much of this knowledge was collected in discussion groups or on farm walks and scientific papers have also been reviewed. In some cases researchers have carried out trials and in others simple trial or survey protocols were provided for farmers. These asked for basic weed and crop measurements or simple observations in order to produce more reliable and 'standardised' results than a subjective 'look see' done in isolation on one farm. When such data is pooled together one farm's data can be used as a replicate within a much larger set of data that will allow us to get a better picture of the overall effectiveness of any management methods. It might also allow us to identify factors that are likely to affect the outcome of any management strategies e.g. type of soil.

The information on each theme is being developed as they progress and can be accessed from each trial page. Also on each page is some background information on the themes and links to any trial or survey sheets. So feel free to have a look and add comments on the trials results pages.
