Using Green Waste Compost in Agriculture

Using Green Waste Compost in Agriculture

HDRA Consultants has produced this booklet as part of an ongoing programme of research into the use of compost in agriculture. The aim of the booklet is to provide practical guidance on the use of green waste compost. It describes the nature of the compost types commonly produced at centralised composting facilities and how they can be used in conventional and organic agriculture.

Contents include:

In response to changes in legislation and in anticipation of further incentives to diversify waste management and recycling practices, the UK composting industry has grown rapidly in the last 5 years. Composts produced are generally of very high quality and although their beneficial effects on the soil and plant health are widely documented, little work had been to quantify these scientifically, especially at field scale.

Consequently, Somerset based compost producer Wyvern Waste Services Ltd commissioned HDRA Consultants to research compost performance and financial implications in comparison with other products and available materials.

HDRA is evaluating the potential for compost use in agriculture in two primary ways; by carrying out field trials on two farms in Somerset and at HDRA research grounds near Coventry. Scientific information about the risks and benefits of compost use in comparison with other agricultural soil amendments are needed as well as evaluation of the financial implications.

The four year programme of research into compost use in agriculture is examining:
