Sowing annuals and bedding plants
During January sow Begonia, Mimulus, Pelargoneum and Coleus.
In February and March start sowing the summer flowering bedding plants such as Impatiens, Cineraria, Ageratum, Lobelia, Antirrhinum, Mesembryanthemum, Heliotrope, Calendula, as they need a long season to grow. Canary Creeper, Tropaeolum perigrinum, an annual climber and Ammobium alatum, an everlasting flower can also be sown now.
Sow seeds in modules if possible to cut down time later on thinning out and potting on. They will need the protection of a greenhouse, conservatory, polytunnel or windowsill.
If you missed out on an autumn sowing of sweet peas then sow some now. They like a long root run, cardboard tubes from toilet or kitchen rolls are ideal. They don’t need high temperatures to germinate so a cool light room or cold frame is adequate.
