Composting - The Cornerstone of Organic Gardening

Composting makes the world go round. It recycles the nutrients that make plants (and animals) grow, feeds the bugs that keep the soil healthy and is a sustainable, low-cost way of dealing with ‘rubbish that rots’. And it can be fun too. This course is a full introduction to the world of composting - ideal to get you started ready to compost successfully for life!

The contents of this course include:

  • An introduction to the basic components of successful composting. Including; where to site your bin, what to compost and dealing with composting problems.

  • A guide to the creatures in your compost bin and how they create compost.

  • Learn more about the wonderful world of worm compost. How do worms create compost, different styles of wormery, creating the optimum conditions for your worms, what to feed your worms.

  • Learning about different types of compost systems. The course will cover a range of systems for composting food waste and other garden waste such as weeds which need hot temperatures.

  • How to use compost in the garden, potting mixes, mulches and liquid feeds.

This course is let by the waste team within the Sustainable Communities Team at Garden Organic. This team devote their time to providing advice on composting as a sustainable solution to organic waste management. They have expertise in the promotion of home composting initiatives in collaboration with local authorities, monitoring and evaluating home composting, and providing information, training and support for home composters and community volunteers, as well as local authority waste minimisation personnel. We are currently involved with a number of Master Composter schemes across the UK which are all run in conjunction with the relevant county council or waste partnership. We have responsibility for training the volunteers and for providing them with technical support and, in some instances, provide the day-to-day operational support.
