Planning Your Plot Webinar
Planning which vegetables to grow, when to grow them, and how to arrange them all often seems like the most bewildering choice both for new growers and even those with more experience.
Successful organic growing, in particular, is all about good planning. In our workshop you will learn how to plan your plot organically, with a focus on crop rotation, preventing pests and diseases, maximising harvests, and planning your plot or growing space for the year ahead.
Our workshop will guide you through the steps, giving you a fundamental understanding of the planning process so that you have the confidence to make your own personal growing plan.
This webinar will include presentations, interactive exercises, and the opportunity for discussion.
- How to assess and plan your growing space – we will consider the key features of your growing site including aspect, soil type, shelter, light levels, and look at how to plan to make the best use of the microclimates within your growing space.
- Choosing a range of crops that suits you, including plants for different situations such as plants that are easy to grow, suitable for small spaces, and shaded gardens.
- Planning a rotation with considerations as to crop families, soil fertility, and the key pests and diseases that can affect certain groups of plants.
- Creating a cropping calendar so that you will know the optimum time to sow, plant out and harvest a range of crop groups.
Skill level: Beginners
You will need to bring: A sample of soil (2 dessert spoons) from your food growing space, a glass jar 2/3 full of water with a lid. This is required if you would like to take part in a soil texture test to compare with others on the webinar.
About your course Leader: Anton Rosenfeld
Anton has been with Garden Organic for over 15 years. His work has ranged from projects with commercial field-scale growers to small-scale community gardens and allotments. He regularly writes for Grow Your Own and Kitchen Garden magazine and has a passion for soils, composting, and growing veg from a wide range of cultures.
