New courses for 2018

We're delighted to announce our new course listing for 2018. Next year will see the introduction of brand new and exciting courses topics, including Organic Ornamentals and Creating a small organic garden, as well as a selection of evening courses.

Our courses prove to be very popular and spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. You may want to consider booking one as a gift or Christmas present, ideal for that budding gardener in your life. Remember! Garden Organic members receive reduced prices for courses.

January
Practical pruning - Thursday 11th January, 10am-4pm
Learn about pruning a variety of small trees and shrubs, to keep them shapely and healthy. Pruning can sometimes seem overly complicated, so the aim of the day is to discuss the main principles and boost confidence levels.

This course covers the thinking behind organic growing, giving you confidence in the techniques and understanding on how to create a healthy and productive growing area.

How to plan your growing space - Wednesday 21st February, 2pm-5pm
This half-day course is a perfect follow on from the ‘Introduction to the principles of organic growing’. Using organic principles, it will focus on how to plan your organic growing space, choosing what to grow and when to grow it.

Attracting wildlife & building biodiversity
- Thursday 15th March, 1.30pm-4.30pm
Attracting the right wildlife to your garden is vital to manage many pests and diseases organically. Join us for this practical afternoon of learning more about what you need to do to make your garden or growing space as wildlife-friendly as possible.

- Wednesday 21st March, 6pm-9pm
This course will dispel the myth that you need a large area to grow your own food. We will demonstrate how, with minimum space, you can produce healthy food organically.

April
Composting - the cornerstone of organic growing
- Thursday 19th April, 9.30am-12.30pm
Composting is a key element of organic growing. This course will help you to fine-tune your composting, to gain an understanding of the processes, and discuss the different mixes and types of bin. We will also show you how to make the best use of your compost for growing healthy food.

Wonderful Wormeries
- Thursday 19th April, 2pm-5pm
This afternoon course will show you how to build a wormery, and the fundamental steps of how to look after it. We will outline how worms make compost, what to feed them and the best uses of vermicompost. We can guarantee that by the end of the day you will be hooked on worms!

*NEW for 2018* Organic Ornamentals
- Thursday 14th June, 6pm-9pm
Flowers are often referred to as ‘ornamentals’. But they don’t just look good, they can be an essential part of your organic growing. Flowers attract pollinators such as bees, they can be used in companion planting in the veg patch – and some you can even eat. If you’d like to learn how to grow healthy blooms for butterflies or bouquets, this day’s course will teach you where and how to grow them.

Pest & Disease Management
- Wednesday 27th June, 10am-4pm
This course will introduce you to a range of techniques for preventing and controlling pests and diseases in your garden and allotment. Choosing the right varieites, how and when t plant, keeping good hygiene, will all contribute to a healthy growing area. Barriers, traps and natural predators help to keep slugs and aphids at bay.

Cutting Edge Veg
- Thursday 26th July, 10am-4pm
This one day course will show you how to grow many of the vegetables, herbs and spices associated with a more exotic range of cuisines and introduce you to vegetables that you may not have tried before.

Growing winter veg
- Wednesday 8th, 10am-4pm
Now is the time to plan ahead and consider your winter growing space. With a little forward planning, you can produce food all year round! We also show you that there is more to winter growing than swedes and leeks.

Introduction to seed saving
- Thursday 6th, 9.30am-1pm
Join us for this half-day course and learn everything you need to know to get started with seed saving from Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library experts. You’ll gain a detailed understanding of the benefits of saving seed and how to select plants for particular characteristics, as well as step by step instructions on saving seeds.

Next steps in seed saving
- Thursday 11th, 9.30am-1pm
This is the perfect follow on from our ‘Introduction to Seed Saving’ course, as well as being ideal for those with some experience of saving seed from vegetables, who are looking to further their skills.
The session focuses on two types of seed with more complex requirements: those from annuals which easily cross-pollinate; and biennial crops which flower and set seed the year after sowing.

Make your own natural Christmas decorations
- Friday 7th, 9.30am-1pm
Get into the festive spirit and have fun using natural materials for your own special Christmas decorations. Learn how to weave your own willow wreath that you can then decorate with
items from our gardens. We also show you how to identify suitable materials in your own garden and elsewhere to give your Christmas the organic look.

NEW Biodynamic gardening workshops for 2018
2018 will see the delivery of a further three workshops, led by the Biodynamic Association. The 2018 workshops follow on from their Introduction to Biodynamic gardening and Tuning into the rhythms of nature course. Introducing you to the fascinating biodynamic approach to gardening and led by biodynamic grower and enthusiast Matthew Hayes, the workshops can be taken individually or as a series.

They will cover the philosophy, main practical methods, and practice within your own garden and each one will include a tour of the biodynamic garden at Garden Organic. Expect to learn a lot and have some fun! Further details and booking for each workshop will follow soon.
