French bean

Uplands

Named after the Uplands Allotments in Handsworth, Birmingham, where it has been grown for many years, though originally from Italy. Sturdy and compact plants (30-40cm) produce pale pink flowers and short straight pods. Guardian Eluned Paramor comments, “Extremely tough character! Survived hot and dry and cool and wet, also seemed unattractive to slugs.” Can be eaten fresh but the plump beans are ideal for drying. Seed colour brown.
