Ukrainian Comrades
Another bean that came to us from John Yeoman, this one is a little different!
From a botanical point of view, it is actually two varieties of bean, that were grown together, hence, 'Comrades'.
Thought to have been taken to the USA by Peace Corp volunteers who had been working in Yalta, Ukraine, in the early 1990s.
The black seeds produce larger plants and a heavy yield of flat, green pods; the yellow seeds produce smooth yellow pods. Both are stringless and can be eaten fresh, or as dried beans.
There have been stories that both black and yellow seeds can be found in the same pods, which we very much doubt, though do feel free to surprise us!
