Help us fight glyphosate
As part of our campaign for a NO vote to the relicensing of glyphosate, we have sent the following letter to the EU's Health and Food Safety Commissioner, Vytenis Andriukaitis, counter-signed by over 3,000 Garden Organic members and supporters. Unfortunately it is now too late to add your name to the letter, however we would encourage you to send a similar version of the letter to your local MEP; you can find their details here.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign so far; either by signing the letter, helping to spread the word or donating to our Fighting Fund. Please check back to our website for the latest news and information.
We also have the background of this issue, including links to research papers and information on how to avoid using glyphosate within the growing advice pages of our website.
Dear Vytenis Andriukaitis
Ref: Relicensing of Glyphosate
On behalf of our Garden Organic members and supporters, I am writing to ask you to block the relicensing of glyphosate.
I urge you to consider the vast amount of independent scientific evidence compiled in the report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), commissioned by the World Health Organisation, which indicates that glyphosate alone, as well as in chemical formulations, causes genotoxicity – in both humans and animals.
We understand that the European Chemical Agency is investigating glyphosate and other surfactants such as tallowamines, used in herbicides, and a report is due in 2017. Given the serious health concerns and conflicting scientific advice, it would surely be irresponsible of the Commission to approve these highly controversial substances before the report is published.
Despite industry claims, herbicides such as glyphosate and its co-formulants also poison the soil and wildlife, and disrupt valuable ecosystems.
We urge you to oppose the relicensing in June.
James Campbell, Garden Organic CEO
