Celebrating Great Big Green Week 2026 - 6th to 14th June
Great Big Green Week is an opportunity for people to come together and take practical action for their community, for nature and for the climate. Thousands of events are hosted across the UK, which demonstrate the brilliant action communities are taking to tackle climate change and restore nature - everything from practical actions such as planting pollinator friendly plants to letter writing workshops, festivals to football matches, seaweed foraging to school assemblies. Organised by The Climate Coalition people are invited to host events and activities in their local area from 6th to 14th June.
At Garden Organic we love to support Great Big Green Week with volunteers involved in lots of events and activities. Here’s just a few of the events we’ve supported so far and what to look out for this weekend.
In Shropshire, Master Composters Janine and Theresa ran a practical composting for a community growing club in Bishop’s Castle. The workshop was delivered at Little Woodbatch, with hands-on composting activities and games to help the group members develop both their home composting methods and to support the development of a community composting group. Little Woodbatch are hoping to open the first community composting site in Shropshire with the support of some funding from Veolia and support from Shopshire Council.
On Sunday (14th June) we will be attending Pam’s Pools Permaculture Site Open day (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) with a composting advice stall and activities.
In Cumbria, we joined in with the ever-popular Susan’s Open Farm Sunday with lots of conversations with visitors promoting the wonders of composting.
On Saturday (13th June) we will be joining Cockermouth Climate Action Network for their flagship event featuring an organic community lunch and lots of eco-friendly stalls. The event is free to attend, and donations are welcomed to support the community’s efforts in improving spaces for wildlife and biodiversity.
In Rugby, alongside our friends at the Rugby Eco-Hub we held a container growing workshop, a practical session about how to grow food in small containers such as yoghurt pots, milk jugs, planters etc. with a focus on preparing soil and compost mixtures for filling the containers and then sowing seeds and plants for summer salads.
We’ve also been running a competition to encourage people to help nature in outdoor growing spaces through our Community Champions programme. We’re inviting residents of Rugby Borough to send us a picture of how they’re helping nature and wildlife, alongside a short explanation of how their idea will support nature.
The Sowing Your Seeds HSL team are looking forward to hosting a stall at the Bradgate Park Summer Fayre in Leicestershire (13th and 14th June). The team will be speaking to visitors about our exciting project to conserve and pass on heirloom vegetable seeds in central England communities.
