Our annual veg growing survey goes mobile!

For 65 years we've been running citizen science projects to help gardeners embrace organic techniques and grow better. Now our annual 'How Did your Veg Grow' survey is going mobile so you can log results into our survey while you garden!
We've teamed up with digital growing companion Fryd to find out how your crops faired in 2025. Throughout November, you'll be able to rate the performance of ten common crops on a scale from one to five in the Fryd lab.
The results provide a valuable snapshot of how crops are performing under annual growing conditions - and these insights help track trends, evaluate crop resilience and highlight how the UK’s changing climate is affecting home-grown food production.
How to take part in our survey
Fryd is available as a free download, at no charge at all, in the UK on both iOS and Android platforms. Simply download the app for free in the Apple or Google Play store on your mobile, create an account and navigate to the Lab within the Plants area. From there you should be able to select and complete the survey.
Please encourage others to take part too – the more information we receive, the better our understanding of veg growing trends and challenges in today’s climate. The survey is open until 30 November.
Will 2025 be a better growing year?
The 2024 growing season, dubbed by many as the ‘Year of the Slug’, saw relentless rain, snails and slugs challenge gardeners nationwide. With 2025’s heatwaves, drought and hosepipe bans, this year’s findings will be especially valuable for understanding the impact of extreme weather on crop success.
The exciting partnership aims to make it easier than ever for gardeners to take part in our surveys and reach new growers. And it will be the first of many citizen science experiments hosted in Fryd Lab, a new feature within the Fryd app designed to make local, at-scale data collection simple and engaging.
“Gardeners are on the front line of climate change, they see and feel the seasons shift, but advice hasn’t kept pace,” said Florian Hassler, co-founder at Fryd. “With Fryd Lab, one five-minute contribution could help your whole area get better local sowing and planting guidance next season.”
