We helped make your voice heard on peat-free growing by being part of the group that handed in a petition to Downing Street on 25 February – signed by thousands of supporters.

Accompanied by our new friend the mysterious ‘Bog Creature’ (pictured below), the delegation of six stepped through the iconic gates to hand in the 16,700 signatures to government. Delegates included RHS director general Clare Matterson, Riverford Organic Farmers’ founder Guy Singh-Watson, Dave Goulson, professor of biology at the University of Sussex, and The Wildlife Trust’s Matt Browne.

We’re very grateful to everyone who signed and shared the petition. Garden Organic has been campaigning for an end to peat use in horticulture for decades (see timeline below), and this is solid proof of public support for legislation to #EndPeatSales. We hope it will finally make the government act to safeguard our precious peatlands.

Sally said: “The Peat Free Partnership has already demonstrated strong support from the horticulture industry - and politicians across the political spectrum have spoken out in favour of legislation. Now the people have spoken too. We’ll keep working to make sure the UK Government listens.”

The petition remains open, along with the opportunity to write to your MP by following the link here so please continue to share and lobby.
