Successful organic growing is all about good planning so you have a feast of plants to enjoy and can nip problems and ‘pests’ in the bud before they take control of your plot. Chris will talk you through planning your plot for the exciting gardening year ahead. He’ll help you learn how to get your plants and plans off to the best start, with a focus on successful seed sowing techniques, how to prick out, harden off and transplant seedlings and his golden rules for tip-top edible crops.

Session leader: Chris Collins
Our head of organic horticulture has gardening experience that spans many years and many locations. After training at the Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, he spent time working in Africa and Japan, before returning to the UK in 1998 as Higher Botanical Horticulturalist at Kew Gardens, and as Head Gardener at Westminster Abbey. Chris also held the highly sought-after position of BBC Blue Peter gardener for nine years, where he got to utter the line "here’s one I made earlier" on numerous occasions!
