Solihull Master Composters
The Solihull Master Composter Programme was funded and delivered in partnership with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. Operating for 2 years between 2014 and 2016 the prime focus was to train volunteers from the borough’s council owned allotment sites. The programme was established at the same time as the removal of a green waste collection service from each of the council’s 15 sites.
Volunteers from each of the allotment sites were trained to become Master Composters in order to share best composting practice amongst their fellow plot holders to ensure a good transition from having green waste collected to dealing with it themselves. The project was successful and as well as increased composting there was also the introduction communal composting bays on some of the larger allotment plots.
Over the course of the two year project, 15 volunteers were trained and supported as Master Composters, contributing over 600 volunteering hours and over 2000 composting conversations both on the allotments and to a wider audience around the borough.
