Variety Champions
Originally from Finland, this traditional early ‘short horn’ type carrot has very wide, stumpy roots which are deep orange-red in colour.

Vegetable Type:

Carrot

Date Added to the Heritage Seed Library:

1984

This is an ex-commercial variety, all the way from Finland. Members who have grown this carrot have reported that it shows some drought-resistance and does well on poor stony soil, with very little splitting. It's also reported to have some resistance to carrot fly.

In terms of eating, our volunteer Seed Guardian, Anne, noted that it's a real all-rounder - good boiled or steamed, or freshly grated in salads. It even freezes (un-blanched) and stores well. What's more, they found children preferred its mild flavour to the more aromatic varieties available.

Why we save London Market carrot 🔗

As our climate changes and pest behaviour alters, it's essential we save varieties like London Market carrot, which has anecdotally shown resistance to drought and carrot fly.
