Nurtured By Nature CIO

On March 15th 2025, we cleared 2 large areas of rubbish strewn tarmac and started a community growing project, growing food with our local community, for our local community. We decided from the off to follow zero waste ideals, to repurpose items that would have gone to landfill, reduce plastic and grow everything organically.

Nurtured by Nature CIO aims to bring together a community to grow the healthiest, most nutritious, organically grown food possible, protect birds, insects, local wildlife, and the environment through sustainable, zero-waste practices, and teach future generations why all of this is important.

We'd run a pilot project in a few of our own gardens the previous year, so we had saved seeds to get us started on the bigger project. This year, we are working with Heritage Seed Library seeds, Real Seeds, Seeds from the Seed Detective and others.
We gave away 160kg of food, for free, in our first year.

For 2026, we have an extra area of land, extending our growing area by 50%. We also have 3 polycrubs, a netted polytunnel and a greenhouse, giving us 48 square metres of undercover growing space (we're on a hill in teh central belt of Scotland, so winds are an issue). Everything we grow within the project is edible, including our flowers, and the bottom section is protected by a willow fedge we planted at the end of 2025. We make our own compost and, this year, are starting two wormeries.
We work with local children, seniors, Community Payback, Mental Health organisations and collaborate with other projects in the area.
